Can I change my Part D plan?
Yes — and you should review your plan every year. Here's when and how to switch.
When you can switch
You can switch Part D plans during these periods:
- Annual Election Period — October 15 through December 7. New coverage starts January 1.
- Special Enrollment Periods — if you have a qualifying life event
- Extra Help SEP — if you receive Extra Help, you can switch once per quarter (January–September)
Why you should review your plan annually
Plans can change every year. Your current plan may:
- Remove a drug you take from its formulary
- Move your drug to a higher (more expensive) tier
- Add new restrictions like prior authorization or step therapy
- Change its premium, deductible, or copay amounts
- Change its pharmacy network
Each fall, your plan sends you an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) detailing what's different for the coming year. Review it carefully.
Switching is free and straightforward
There's no fee to switch Part D plans. Simply enroll in your new plan during an eligible enrollment period, and your old plan is automatically cancelled. You don't need to notify your old plan.
